PPV: Train patient access staff members on HIPAA

EHR Connection, August 18, 2008

Editor’s note: The following article is the fourth of five in a series about effectively training specific groups of staff members with respect to HIPAA privacy and security compliance.

Your patient access staff members are often the first to greet your patients. They serve an important role in providing excellent customer service and ensuring patient satisfaction for repeat business. But their responsibilities don’t end there.

Registration staff members are also often the first to encounter sensitive demographic, insurance, billing, and clinical patient information. Educating them with respect to HIPAA privacy and security compliance is essential.

One common problem area is computer placement. Positioning computer monitors to prevent others from viewing patient information is extremely important. Computers aren’t the only concern. Registration staff members must be cognizant of the information strewn about on their desks.
