50,000 state employees in Minnesota to have online access to medical records

EHR Connection, August 18, 2008

Minnesota’s 50,000 state employees will have online access to their health records as early as 2009, and Governor Tim Pawlenty hopes that all state residents will have similar access by 2011, the Star Tribune reported July 29.

State employees will be able to log onto their secure personal medical profiles to view test results, compare prices of treatment options, and use their flexible spending account debit cards to pay for eligible out-of-pocket expenses, according to the article.

“We need to put consumers in charge,” Pawlenty told the Minneapolis newspaper. “We need to give them the tools so they can make good decisions . . . This would be a significant breakthrough in the way we maintain information in this state.”

PHRs could lower prices, streamline paperwork, and give consumers control over their medical histories. Pawlenty said these and other measures put Minnesota in the forefront of consumer-friendly medicine, the newspaper reported.
