800,000 Medicaid patients' information instantly available in database

EHR Connection, August 18, 2008

The South Carolina Health Information Exchange (SCHIEx) has made the medical histories of 800,000 Medicaid patients available to physicians, clinics, and hospitals, The Post and Courier reported July 21.

Physicians can use a password-protected Web portal to call up the medical histories of their Medicaid patients on SCHIEx (pronounced sky-ex), according to the Charleston newspaper. The information, including treatment and prescription history, belongs to the SC Department of Health and Human Services and will not be housed on provider computers. The database is encrypted and is decrypted only when a provider requests information.

Claims data already existed electronically but was not immediately to providers before implementation of the new system, Jeff Stensland, director of public information for the state’s Medicaid agency, told the newspaper.
