Police arrest accused hospital thief
Healthcare Security Weekly, August 18, 2008
Police in Austin, TX, have captured a man they say is responsible for stealing purses and wallets from two hospitals. Surveillance video and a GPS tracking device helped catch the alleged thief, who was already on parole for a burglary charge, reported KXAN 36 in Austin.
Surveillance video captured the 48-year-old Austin man stealing a wallet from an unattended purse at Dell Children’s Hospital in November 2007, the TV station reported. Police did not know the man’s identify but circulated a video image to local hospital security offices.
In July, security officers at University Medical Center at Brackenridge arrested the man inside their facility. His parole required him to carry a GPS tracking device, which police said helped place him at the scene of that theft, as well as a previous theft the month before. Police said the man could face additional charges as he is a suspect in similar thefts at other hospitals and office buildings around Austin.
