Tip of the week: Customize training to specific departments
Healthcare Security Weekly, August 4, 2008
For several years, environment of care (EC) competency requirements have been under the purview of the human resources (HR) chapter of the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals. However, in 2009, those provisions will return to the EC standards, and that could bring some changes for your compliance program.
The transfer of competency requirements between the chapters offers an opportunity for EC leaders to customize training to a department-specific level, says Marge McFarlane, MS, CHSP, safety coordinator at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, WI.
For example, a detailed course on infant abduction prevention could be given to the nursery staff, while behavioral unit employees can receive more in-depth training on suicide risks and how to avoid letting everyday items become weapons for agitated patients.
To learn more about the change, go to www.hcpro.com/ppv-214771.html. The cost is $10. Briefings on Hospital Safety subscribers received this story with their subscriptions.
