United Nations says AIDS epidemic has stabilized

Infection Control Monitor, August 1, 2008

In its yearly report issued July 29, the United Nations AIDS agency had good news: fewer people are dying of AIDS, more patients are on HIV medication, and the global AIDS epidemic is stable after peaking in the late 1990s.

But the agency warned that governments need to continue setting aside money to battle AIDS in the coming decades as patients live longer on AIDS treatment. On July 30, President Bush signed legislation that triples the amount of money the U.S. government will spend around the world on AIDS and other diseases, including malaria and tuberculosis, to $48 billion over five years.
