Survey reveals concern about security of computerized medical records
EHR Connection, August 4, 2008
A recent Harris Poll reveals that most American adults believe computerized medical records are at greater risk of loss or theft than paper records, Harris Interactive, Inc., reported July 15.
The poll revealed that 47% of respondents think computerized records are lost or stolen most often. One in six, or 16%, said paper records were lost or stolen most often, and 23% said the rate of loss or theft was the same for both.
An estimated 4% or nine million American adults also said they believe that their confidential medical information or that of a family member has been lost or stolen, according to Harris.
The online poll of 2,454 adults between June 9 and 16 was a collaborative effort involving Harris Interactive and Alan F. Westin, PhD, professor of public law and government emeritus at Columbia University.
