Elderly man beaten by hospital roommate

Healthcare Security Weekly, July 28, 2008

Police have charged a 48-year-old man with attempted homicide after he allegedly beat his elderly roommate at the Heritage Valley Beaver Hospital in Beaver, PA, with a wooden chair.

The assault occurred around 11 p.m. on July 16, reported the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The 84-year-old victim survived what police described as a vicious assault and was being treated at Allegheny General Hospital, the newspaper said. The victim suffered a broken nose, jaw, and eye socket, as well as a fractured leg and ankle and “massive head trauma,” according to a criminal complaint by the Brighton Police Department.

Patrick J. Brown was arrested and also charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, and reckless endangerment. Police said Brown was sedated before the attack and noted that officers had a difficult time understanding him, the newspaper reported. Brown allegedly closed the door to the hospital room and blocked it with a wheelchair, according to a police affidavit. A nurse called security and officers found the elderly roommate in his bed bleeding.
