Medicare offers incentives for e-prescribing

Medicare is offering incentive payments to physicians who adopt electronic prescribing, calling the technology a more efficient and convenient way to improve quality of care.
The five-year incentive program begins in 2009 with a 2% incentive payment for those who successfully implement e-prescribing in the first year, with smaller payments in the following year. Medicare expects to save $156 million over the course of the program through avoided adverse drug events.
