Attacks on nurses drawing attention

Healthcare Security Weekly, July 21, 2008

Half of all non-fatal workplace assaults occur in healthcare and social service settings with nurses bearing the brunt of attacks, reported the The New York Times.

It is uncertain whether the situation is worsening or attracting more attention because of recent changes in research methodology, including the definition of violence. No matter the reason, advocates for the nursing profession are demanding more accountability from healthcare facilities, according to the July 9 article.

Violence in healthcare facilities is nearly always perpetrated by patients and patient families, according to the Times. And it is probably underreported as the perception that violence is part of the job still lingers among nurses.
