Tip of the week: Prepare frontline workers for surveyor questions
Healthcare Security Weekly, July 21, 2008
As part of the May Joint Commission survey at Graham Hospital in Canton, IL, surveyors conducted a tracer that involved a tornado hitting the facility.
A surveyor took two hospital officials to various areas—switchboard, volunteer office, emergency department, security headquarters, and an extended care facility—and polled workers on the job by asking, “I just heard an announcement for a code black; what is that? What do you do in a tornado?”
After asking workers what they needed to do, the surveyor turned to the hospital‘s emergency management officials to ask if that was the correct response, and then discussed the results.
