Tip: Ambulatory EHRs offer variety of CDS benefits
EHR Connection, July 14, 2008
Ambulatory EHR systems often include a set of clinical decision support (CDS) tools. This is the fourth and final installment in a series on CDS tools and their value as part of an ambulatory EHR system. Consider these CDS tools when evaluating EHR systems:
· Medical necessity checking/ABN alerts: Remind physicians of laboratory or other procedures that may not be reimbursed according to payer rules; reminds physician when Medicare requires an Advance Beneficiary Notice for noncovered services
· Imaging tools: Provide the ability to rotate, enlarge, enhance, slice, or otherwise process an image, such as an x-ray or photograph
· Tailored patient instructions: Combine multiple instructions on a single document, specific to the patient’s needs
· Generation of patient lists: Enable patient follow-up call, reminder letters, lapses in refills, or recall notification
· Clinical trial screening: Automatically identifies available clinical trials per patient conditions that the physician can recommend
This tip is from “The No-Hassle Guide to EHR Implementation” published by HCPro, Inc. Check the previous three issues of EHR Connection for additional information about the value of CDS tools in ambulatory EHR systems.
