Survey finds size of physician practice a good indicator of EHR adoption

EHR Connection, July 14, 2008

Nearly half of the nation’s physicians practice in small offices, either alone or with one or two colleagues, and fewer than 9% of those small practices use EHRs, The New York Times reported June 19.

The government sponsored survey also found that 51% of larger practices with 50 or more physicians use EHRs, according to the article. The report, published online June 18 in The New England Journal of Medicine, found that physicians who use EHRs say overwhelmingly that the technology has helped improve the timeliness and quality of care.

Experts say bringing patient records into the computer age is essential to improving care, reducing errors, and containing costs in the nation’s healthcare system, The New York Times reported. But many physicians, particularly those in small practices, lack financial incentive to invest in computerized patient records.
