Tip of the week: Standard precautions prevent unsafe injections
Infection Control Monitor, July 11, 2008
Infection control basics can help prevent problems with unsafe injections. Such injections, “are entirely preventable by applying standard precautions and basic principals of infection control,” says Joe Perz, DRPH, from the CDC’s prevention and response branch of the division of healthcare quality promotion.
In addition to proper hand hygiene, medications should always be drawn in a designated clean medication preparation area with a new sterile syringe and needle. Always access parenteral medications and injection equipment in an aseptic manner, Perz says. In general, any item that could have come in contact with blood or other body fluids should remain separate from other items.
