Tip of the week: Ensure proper training to prevent unsafe injection practices
Infection Control Monitor, July 4, 2008
Unsafe injection practices are in the spotlight after a number of disease outbreaks made headlines within the last year.
Problems arise when staff members are improperly trained or misinformed. Consider a case in which an anesthetist filled a single syringe with sedation medication to treat up to 24 patients. The anesthetist believed that because the medication was administered through heparin locks, it protected the patients from infection, says Joe Perz, DRPH, from the CDC’s prevention and response branch of the division of healthcare quality promotion. Facilities should review staff practices at least once per year.
