The eight Ps of safety
Lab Safety Advisor, June 30, 2008
To make sure that a safety mindset is inherent in every activity, practice the following eight Ps of safety:
- Philosophy: Safety must be the core value of the organization from the top down.
- Protect: Supervisors must be accountable for protecting personnel, equipment, property, and facilities under their control.
- Prevention: Maintain a safe and healthful workplace through a functional accident prevention program.
- Partnership: Make your workplace safe by partnering with facility programs, policies, and procedures to ensure employees are safe.
- Participation: Not only should all employees be accountable for their own safety, but everyone has a duty to protect others.
- Professional: Employees must be technically competent to perform the job in the safest manner possible utilizing the appropriate equipment for the testing involved.
- Proactive: Employees need to know there is a safety program and how to access the parts of the program when needed.
- Priority: Safety must be a priority to create a healthy workplace.
