Tip: More benefits of ambulatory EHR clinical decision support tools
EHR Connection, June 30, 2008
Clinical decision support (CDS) tools are a common component of ambulatory EHR systems. This is the second installment in a series on CDS tools and their value as part of an ambulatory EHR system. Consider your need for the following tools when you evaluate EHR systems:
- Patient summary screen reminds any clinician viewing an EHR of the need to manage chronic diseases, health maintenance, or preventive services
- Context-sensitive, structured data entry templates, although specific to only one disease or problem at a time, enable the capture of necessary data relevant to a patient condition, and relevant only to that condition
- Graphing, trend, and flow sheets enable comparison of data points over time, to identify trends and impact of medications on vital signs
- Clinical calculations assist in performing calculations at risk of omission due to complexity, ensure accurate calculation, including all variables, and reduce time spent in performing calculations
This tip is from “The No-Hassle Guide to EHR Implementation” published by HCPro, Inc. Check future issues of EHR Connection for more information about the value of CDS tools in ambulatory EHR systems.
