2009 National Patient Safety Goals announced

Preventing hospital-associated infections (HAI) such as MDROs, central-line associated bloodstream infections, and surgical site infections are a major focus of The Joint Commission’s 2009 National Patient Safety Goals released on June 17.
ICPs will be most interested in Goal 7, which requires hospitals to reduce the risk of HAIs. But don’t neglect to review Goal 13, which requires hospitals to encourage patient’s active involvement in their own care as a safety strategy. One of the elements of performance requires hospitals to provide patients with information on IC measures including:
- Hand hygiene practices
- Respiratory hygiene practices
- Contact precautions
The new goals will have a year-long phasing in process, and with full compliance expected by January 1, 2010, according to a press release from The Joint Commission. To read the goals, click here.
