IC interventions cut school absenteeism

Infection Control Monitor, June 20, 2008

A study by researchers at Children’s Hospital Boston found that basic IC interventions—including the use of hand sanitizer and disinfecting surfaces—helped reduce absences caused by gastrointestinal illness in elementary school children.

The study was published in the June 6 issue of Pediatrics. The researchers found that norovirus was found less often on classroom surfaces in the group where students used alcohol-based hand sanitizers at key points throughout the school day and teachers used disinfecting wipes on student desks. The researchers concluded that schools should consider adopting these IC practices to reduce days lost because of illnesses.
