Consumers Union lauds CMS IPPS proposal
Quality Improvement Monitor, June 20, 2008
Consumers Union, the nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports, lauded CMS for its proposal to stop paying for nine more hospital-acquired conditions in 2009.
“Generally, we strongly support the proactive nature of these proposals that significantly expand the federal government’s effort to improve healthcare outcomes through payment adjustments to healthcare providers and public disclosure of healthcare quality and safety measures,” Consumers Union said in a June 13 comment to the agency about its proposed 2009 Inpatient Prospective Payment System.
The nonprofit urged CMS to make the data on hospital-acquired conditions public and also urged the Medicare agency to add Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus to its list of preventable conditions targeted for nonpayment.
