Massachusetts insurer to expand physician ratings

Quality Improvement Monitor, June 13, 2008

Despite a lawsuit claiming that physician ratings defame doctors, one Massachusetts insurer is expanding its tiering system and another is considering offering its clients a plan that ranks doctors, according to the Boston Globe.

The Group Insurance Commission, which negotiates health insurance plans for municipal and state workers in Massachusetts, has a rankings system that rewards patients who see top-rated doctors by charging them lower co-payments. Last month, the Massachusetts Medical Society sued the Commission, charging that the system defames doctors who score poorly, the Globe said.

Nonetheless, Tufts Health Plan says it will expand its ratings to include specialists. And Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, is considering a health plan that features doctor rankings, the Globe said.
