Tip: More definitions to aid in the transition from paper records to an EHR

EHR Connection, June 16, 2008

The transition from a paper medical record to an EHR isn’t simply about accessing patient information via a desktop computer instead of searching through folders in file cabinets.

Technology has made patient information more portable than ever. Understanding the difference between hardware and media is essential to reaping all of the benefits new technology has to offer.

  • Hardware: any form of computing device with the ability to retain information, including servers, workstations, printers, network devices, and all forms of portable or mobile devices, such as notebook or laptop computers, personal digital assistants (PDA), handheld devices, tablet PCs, wireless computers, smart phones, and USB drives.
  • Media: any material used to store information, including hard drives, memory chips, and any removable/transportable digital memory medium, such as magnetic tape or disk, optical disk, digital versatile disk or DVD, digital memory card, or memory stick.
