Security officer stops attack on ED nurse

Healthcare Security Weekly, June 9, 2008

A security officer rushed to rescue a nurse who was allegedly attacked by a patient in the emergency department at St. John Medical Center in Longview, WA.

The patient is accused of attacking the nurse on June 1 and attempting to rape her, according to The (Longview) Daily News. The attack occurred when a 23-year-old transient man was being questioned by two triage nurses after his friends brought him to the hospital for a mental evaluation, a detective told the newspaper. A security officer had checked the patient for weapons.

The patient allegedly grabbed one of the nurses by the shirt and shoulder, ripped her scrubs shirt, and pulled her to the floor. When she fell, she hit her head and back on a door jamb and began to scream, the newspaper reported. A security officer who was nearby responded and apprehended the patient.
