Ontario hospitals ordered to report all cases of C. diff starting September 30
Infection Control Monitor, June 6, 2008
Government officials have ordered all Ontario hospitals to start reporting all cases of C. diff beginning September 30, the Canadian Press reported.
All 157 hospitals in the province will need to report on the number of cases of C. diff, which has caused serious concern in Canada since 2,000 people died from infections in Quebec in 2003. There have been 260 deaths from C. diff infections reported so far this year in seven different Ontario hospitals.
Health minister George Smitherman said C. diff is the first of many types of infectious diseases that hospitals will be required to report to the public via a Web site that will be set up for hospitals to use for their mandatory reporting.
