Tip: Assess staff readiness for EHR implementation
EHR Connection, June 9, 2008
Preparing the people involved in and affected by a transition from paper records to EHRs is often the most important and most overlooked factor in the process..
An unsupportive culture, ill-prepared staff, and physicians who are disinterested, fearful, or even antagonistic can create a seemingly insurmountable roadblock. Assess the situation at your facility by considering these readiness indicators:
- Physician antagonism toward or lack of interest in the EHR
- Physician fear of change
- Physician and administration concerns about cost and return on investment
- Nursing personnel disinterest and concerns about ability to perform duties
- Difficulty implementing new systems in ancillary departments
- Therapist and specialist desire for “specialty” systems
- Finance and administration recommendations for bridge technology instead of EHRs
