Tip: Assess staff readiness for EHR implementation

EHR Connection, June 9, 2008

Preparing the people involved in and affected by a transition from paper records to EHRs is often the most important and most overlooked factor in the process..

An unsupportive culture, ill-prepared staff, and physicians who are disinterested, fearful, or even antagonistic can create a seemingly insurmountable roadblock. Assess the situation at your facility by considering these readiness indicators:

  • Physician antagonism toward or lack of interest in the EHR
  • Physician fear of change
  • Physician and administration concerns about cost and return on investment
  • Nursing personnel disinterest and concerns about ability to perform duties
  • Difficulty implementing new systems in ancillary departments
  • Therapist and specialist desire for “specialty” systems
  • Finance and administration recommendations for bridge technology instead of EHRs
