CMS to select 12 EHR demonstration participants
EHR Connection, June 9, 2008
CMS will select 12 participants for a Medicare EHR demonstration project from among more than 30 applicant communities in early June, according to a May 19 press release.
This demonstration will provide Medicare incentive payments to primary care physician practices that use certified EHRs to improve the quality of patient care, according to the press release.
CMS said it anticipates that the project will reduce medical errors and improve the quality of care for approximately 3.6 million Americans. The agency will award financial incentives to as many as 1,200 small- to medium-size physician practices during a five-year period. Total payments under the demonstration may be as high as $58,000 per physician or $290,000 per practice.
“This is an outstanding response from communities and, in some cases, entire states. It shows the great appetite for programs that offer incentives to physicians who efficiently use EHRs to improve the quality of care they provide to their patients,” HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt said in the press release. “I congratulate the applicants for their energy and vision in seizing this opportunity to help transform the way health care is delivered in our nation.”
