Reflect on 2007 safety violations

Lab Safety Advisor, June 2, 2008

June is National Safety Month. It is time to reflect on OSHA’s top 10 safety violations for 2007:
  1. Scaffolding
  2. Hazard communication
  3. Fall protection
  4. Respiratory protection
  5. Lockout/tagout
  6. Powered industrial trucks
  7. Electrical wiring
  8. Ladders
  9. Machine guarding
  10. General electrical
Although lab employees aren’t involved with scaffolding or powered trucks in the workplace, the others do come into play. Here are some issues you need to address:
  • Have you done your material safety data sheet (MSDS) audit for this year and do you have all of the appropriate MSDS in place?
  • Are spills and clutter removed to avoid slips and falls?
  • Have your employees that use a respirator been properly face fit tested?
  • Is a lockout/tagout system in place when performing equipment repair?
  • Are all electrical plugs grounded?
  • Are ladders and step stools used and stored appropriately?
Don’t let your lab become an OSHA statistic.
