Tip: Points to ponder about PHR policies
EHR Connection, June 2, 2008
If PHRs are or will become part of your organization’s health information system, ensure that a new or existing policy reflects this change.
Your organization can consider three distinctly different options with respect to PHRs:
- Do not accept PHRs directly into your health information system. This does not preclude abstracting any clinically relevant information into the designated record set.
- Accept unstructured PHR content directly into the designated record set when a licensed healthcare professional reviews it for clinical relevance. This option places content into the designated record set as reference material, instead of into the broader health information system. If the content is clinically relevant, providers should use it to make decisions about a patient’s healthcare or payment for healthcare.
- Accept structured PHR directly into the legal health record when your organization supports the structured means to do so.
