Helicopter crashes on hospital roof

Healthcare Security Weekly, June 2, 2008

A pilot and passenger escaped with their lives after a helicopter crashed on the roof of the Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in downtown Grand Rapids, MI, May 29.

The crash occurred around 11 a.m. and television images showed thick, black smoke at the hospital campus following the crash, the Associated Press reported. The Aero Med helicopter crashed and burst into flames atop the 11-story building during a training run, reported the Grand Rapids Press. The crash forced a major evacuation of patients from several top floors because of smoke and fuel leaks, the newspaper said.

The pilot and a passenger, who was a federal aviation official, escaped from the crash and did not have serious injuries. A major blaze burned on the rooftop for several minutes.

The upcoming issued of Briefings on Hospital Safety will feature an article about helipad precautions.
