Sword-swinging man arrested at Virginia hospital
Healthcare Security Weekly, May 26, 2008
A 57-year-old man, who was swinging a sword and reportedly wearing a ninja outfit, was arrested at a Virginia hospital.
The incident happened May 19 at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in Christiansburg, reported The Roanoke Times. Blacksburg police had an emergency custody order to serve on the man before he came into the hospital with the sword. He tried to enter a secure portion of the building that holds a psychiatric center, but the building’s security system locked down and he was trapped in a corridor, the newspaper said.
Hospital security and county law enforcement officers were able to get him to lay down the sword without anyone being injured. Officers then used pepper spray to keep him away from the sword until they could subdue him.
