Medical society sues over physician ratings
Quality Improvement Monitor, May 23, 2008
The Massachusetts Medical Society this week filed suit against the Group Insurance Commission, alleging its physicians rating system hurts doctors and patients, according to the Boston Globe.
The commission, which oversees health insurance for thousands of public employees, began a physician ratings system several years ago. Under the system, patients who see higher-ranked doctors have lower co-payments than those who see physicians with lower ratings.
The suit charges that the ratings system has defamed lower-ranked doctors and defrauded patients who have higher co-payments because they see physicians on the lower end of the scale, the Globe said. Both doctors and Massachusetts Medical Society question the accuracy of the ratings.
