Newspaper ads urge consumers to shop for quality care

Quality Improvement Monitor, May 23, 2008

CMS this week launched a $1.9 million ad campaign to drive consumers to its Hospital Compare Web site.

The ads appeared in May 21 editions of 58 major daily newspapers and provided local hospital scores on two of the 26 quality and patient satisfaction measures. Those two measures are:

  • Percentage of patients at each hospital who always received help when they requested it, as reported by the patients themselves
  • Percentage of patients at each hospital who were given antibiotics one hour prior to surgery, as reported by hospitals

The government Web site offers allows users to compare the quality of care provided in nearly 4,000 hospitals across the nation.
