PPV: Outsource your data storage-Reduce stress and remain HIPAA compliant without breaking the bank

EHR Connection, May 26, 2008

Dan Novak, the information technology (IT) manager at Euclid Insurance in Itasca, IL, helps the company support clients with health insurance renewals, and this involves gathering private information about enrollees.

It’s a task that’s easier said than done. And it’s costly for a healthcare entity to develop and maintain a security solution that’s safe and simple to use in an environment that’s full of potential privacy holes.

Euclid learned this the hard way after making a large initial investment in a company-run security system with encrypted data and code keys for Internet transmission—one that clients found too difficult to understand and use.

This caused a strain on not only clients and business, but also the company’s help desk and IT team. This experience convinced Novak that outsourcing the job to a vendor was a better option for Euclid. The return on investment one year later also convinced him that hospitals and other healthcare entities should consider outsourcing data storage.

“Not so long ago, I didn’t realize that there were Web-based options out there that remained compliant,” says Novak. “Now, I believe it’s just an awareness issue.”
