Quality suffers at safety-net hospitals

Quality Improvement Monitor, May 16, 2008

Hospitals that treat poor and underserved patients lag behind other hospitals when it comes to quality of care, according to a new study by Journal of the American Medical Association.

"Safety-net hospitals provide a lower quality of care than non-safety-net hospitals," lead researcher Rachel M. Werner, MD, of the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, told HealthDay News. "Over time, the quality was lower than non-safety-net hospitals."

Going forward, this will become problematic for safety-net hospitals since pay-for-performance rewards organizations based on the quality of care they deliver.
