Group issues updated IC guidelines for endoscopy
Infection Control Monitor, May 16, 2008
The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) has updated its IC guidelines for gastrointestinal endoscopy.
The IC guidelines appear in the May issue of GIE: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the society’s monthly journal. The guidelines include:
- Transmission of infection as a result of GI endoscopes is extremely rare, and recently reported cases are caused by lapses in reprocessing protocols or defective equipment
- Endoscopes should undergo high-level disinfection as recommended by governmental agencies and all pertinent professional organizations
- Extensive training of staff involved in endoscopic reprocessing is mandatory for quality assurance and for effective IC
- Adhere to general IC principles in the endoscopy unit
