Suicide precautions

Long-Term Care Nursing Advisor, September 19, 2008

If a resident states he or she no longer wishes to live and intends to harm him or herself, the facility will initiate suicide precautions. This includes, in some circumstances, modifying the physical environment and securing the assistance of mental health professionals when an unusual potential for injury is the result of the expressed wishes of a resident. The facility will maintain such procedures and modify them as necessary in specific circumstances.
