Security guards strike at some Kaiser hospitals
Healthcare Security Weekly, May 12, 2008
Contract security officers walked off the job at 16 Kaiser Permanente medical facilities in northern California last week in a three-day strike to raise support for their longtime efforts to unionize, reported the Sacramento Business Journal. Security guards in southern California also walked off the job for one day only.
The strike was called by Service Employees International Union Local 24/7, which has tried to organize 1,500 security guards who work at Kaiser facilities but are employed by Pasadena-based Inter-Con Security Systems, Inc., the Journal reported. Inter-Con, one of the world’s largest privately held security firms, filed an unfair labor practice complaint against the union in response to the strike, reported the Sacramento Bee.
A Kaiser spokesman said replacement security officers were on duty and patient care was not affected.
