Four hospital employees charged for failing to report rape
Healthcare Security Weekly, May 12, 2008
Prosecutors in Scottsdale, AZ filed charges against four hospital employees who allegedly failed to report the sexual assault of a stroke patient to law enforcement, reported CBS 5 Phoenix.
Police were called to Scottsdale Healthcare-Osborn Hospital on January 14 by a security supervisor who reported the sexual assault of one of the hospital’s patients. Charges of failing to report the assault of an incapacitated/vulnerable adult were filed against a hospital associate vice president, a nurse manager, a psychiatrist, and a rehabilitation coordinator, the television station reported.
A police investigation revealed that a complaint was reported to the hospital on December 12, 2007 and those charged were made aware of the rape allegations, police said. At some point, the decision was made to not immediately notify the police as required by state law. The four employees are scheduled to appear in court later this month. Police do not have a suspect in the patient assault, the station said.
