A culturally sensitive family asthma management program tested in Puerto Rico led to reduced symptoms and decreased hospital and emergency room visits, a new study shows. The home-based intervention—designed specifically for implementation in low-income and minority groups—shows promise for reducing asthma morbidity and mortality, one of the study’s authors says.
“The study posits this intervention as an alternative to asthma disease management [DM] in countries with limited financial resources,” says Doryliz Vila, associate director of the Behavioral Sciences Research Institute at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan.
