Long-Term Care Nursing Advisor, May 2, 2008

Compartment syndrome is a painful condition that occurs when pressure within the muscles builds up, preventing blood and oxygen from reaching muscles and nerves. This is a very serious complication that may develop following an injury or surgical procedure. It is common in long-bone fractures and musculoskeletal conditions in which there is no fracture. The most common location of compartment syndrome in adults is in the fracture tibia.
