E-prescriptions increasing, but still a rarity overall
EHR Connection, April 28, 2008
The number of electronic prescription transactions in Texas has quintupled since 2005 to 1.8 million in 2007, but that number is deceiving the San Antonio Express-News reported April 7.
Nearly 60% of community and chain pharmacies in Texas can accept e-prescriptions via their computer networks, but only 4% of the state’s physicians e-prescribe, the newspaper reported.
Nationally, approximately 150,000 physicians have the capability to e-prescribe via freestanding software or a comprehensive EMR system, but only 80,000 of them actually do so, according to the article.
