Tip of the week: Be careful when recycling electronics
Healthcare Security Weekly, April 28, 2008
Hospitals replace a lot of electronic gear. The challenge for those in charge of environmental policies is to account for the disposition of all the lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, and other assorted hazardous or toxic wastes found in discarded electronics.
Also keep in mind that healthcare information privacy laws support the best practice of hiring a responsible recycler to shred computer hard drives and provide an audit trail of the disposition of this waste.
To learn more about the proper recycling of electronics, go to www.hcpro.com/ppv-208791.html. The cost is $10. Briefings on Hospital Safety subscribers received this story with their subscriptions.
