Hospital collaborative dramatically reduces infections
Quality Improvement Monitor, April 25, 2008
A voluntary collaborative of 39 hospitals in five San Francisco Bay Area counties this week reported it saved an estimated 194 lives by reducing two major types of hospital infections dramatically between April 2006 and the end of last year, saving an estimated 194 lives, according to the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal.
Thirty-four of the 39 hospitals in the collaborative prevented an estimated 60% of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) cases, the paper reported. The hospitals also prevented an estimated 66% of central line-associated bloodstream infections.
The collaborative said about 720 infections were likely prevented, which saved nearly $4 million, the paper said.
