Wisconsin man arrested at hospital for gun possession
Healthcare Security Weekly, April 21, 2008
Police arrested a 46-year-old Wisconsin man April 12 for allegedly carrying a concealed weapon and ammunition at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI.
Gundersen security officers detained the man on the fifth floor of the hospital after he spoke with a cafeteria employee, who became concerned about comments he was making, said Security Manager Robert Nordby. Security officers found he had a handgun and took him into custody until LaCrosse police arrived.
Prosecutors said the man went to the hospital to exorcise demons because of a professor dying there 20 years ago. Nordby said the incident was reminiscent of the Georgia hospital shooting in March that left three people dead after a man sought revenge for his mother’s death. However, in Wisconsin, security staff were able to prevent a tragedy. “In this case, we stopped a situation from getting bad,” he said.
