Former hospital security guard and others charged in ID scheme
Healthcare Security Weekly, April 21, 2008
In another case of identity fraud, a former Rhode Island Hospital security guard and three former RadioShack workers have been charged in a scheme to steal the identities of patients, the Associated Press reported.
The former guard obtained patients’ names, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers, according to a federal grand jury indictment. With help from the three RadioShack employees, he allegedly used that information to open credit card accounts and activate cell phone accounts at stores in Providence and Cranston, RI, the AP reported. The indictment says the man stole the identities of nine patients.
