Tip of the week: Watch for prisoner patients in MRI rooms
Healthcare Security Weekly, April 21, 2008
The Joint Commission recently issued a Sentinel Event Alert about MRI safety. The Alert, in part, offers advice on how to prevent injuries and deaths to patients and employees within the strong magnetic fields surrounding MRI equipment.
When it comes to MRI safety, think about whether your policies address prisoner patients who enter an MRI suite, says Elizabeth Di Giacomo-Geffers, RN, MPH, CNAA, BC, a healthcare consultant at Di Giacomo-Geffers and Associates in Trabuco Canyon, CA. Prisoners might wear handcuffs, tracking devices, or ID tags that contain metal, all of which are risks near an MRI scanner.
