Quality Improvement Monitor, April 18, 2008

Another insurer has announced it will no longer pay for the same preventable errors for which Medicare will no longer reimburse hospitals starting October 1, 2008.

Cigna this week announced its change in policy. The move comes just weeks after Wellpoint revised its policy on hospital-acquired conditions. CMS will no longer reimburse hospitals for the following conditions beginning October 1, 2008 unless they were documented as present on admission:

  • Serious preventable event -- object left in surgery
  • Serious preventable event -- air embolism
  • Serious preventable event -- blood incompatibility
  • Catheter-associated urinary tract infections
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Vascular catheter-associated infection
  • Surgical site infection -- mediastinitis after coronary artery bypass graft surgery
