Minnesota healthcare providers receive loans for interoperable EHRs
EHR Connection, April 14, 2008
The Minnesota Department of Health has approved the first of two loans under the state’s new $6.3 million Electronic Health Record Revolving Account and Loan Program, according to the department’s March 18 press release.
Swift County-Benson Hospital in Benson, MO and Mille Lacs Health System in Onamia, MO will borrow $2.3 million through a program signed into law last year by Governor Tim Pawlenty.
The intent of the program is to help Minnesota’s rural hospitals, nursing homes, physician clinics in small towns, and other community healthcare providers replace paper records with interoperable EHR systems, according to the press release. The program provides no-interest six-year loans of up to $1.5 million on a first-come, first-served basis.
Funding for the EHR loan program is part of Minnesota’s e-Health Initiative, which aims to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare through the use of health information technology. Minnesota law requires all healthcare providers in the state to use EHRs by January 1, 2015.
