Inmate escapes from hospital

Healthcare Security Weekly, April 14, 2008

A Cook County Jail inmate, who was handcuffed to a crutch, overpowered a correctional officer on April 8 and fled a Chicago hospital by jumping into a waiting sport-utility vehicle, reported the Chicago Sun-Times.

The inmate was apprehended by early evening in a South Side apartment by U.S. Marshal and Cook County sheriff officers, the newspaper reported. He had shaved off his braided cornrows, changed clothes, and removed his shackles.

The 27-year-old man fled from the John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital. He was arrested without incident. Police believe the escape was planned, as the man ran to a waiting SUV so fast, neither the off-duty security guard who chased him nor the two officers he alerted could catch up. “He ran like he was running the Olympics,” the guard said.

The man was jailed on aggravated robbery charges. He was at the hospital for cancer treatment and told investigators he escaped to spend his remaining time out of prison.
