Make ergonomic improvements to your workplace

Lab Safety Advisor, April 8, 2008

Ergonomic improvements include changing work practices or the way work is organized. This could include:
  • Providing a variety in the job through job rotation to include working postures, physical exertion, and visual and mental demands
  • Adjusting work schedules and the pace (not always an option in laboratories)
  • Encouraging exercise—employees who exercise regularly increase the range of motion of their joints
  • Keeping the work area clean and in good repair—eliminating clutter can reduce reaching, bending, or twisting when handling specimens or working with instruments
  • Breaking up work with frequent, short rest periods—even a few seconds periodically to recover can be helpful
